Last week I came across this quote by the English writer Samuel Johnson (1709 – 1784):

“People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.”

It resonated with me. We all know a lot, yet we don’t always remember it at the right moment. I see it in my alliance coaching and mentoring too. The coaching and mentoring often opens temporary locked elements of knowledge and helps people to remember what they already know. Different viewpoints enable them to see how they can apply that knowledge to new situations.

For some changes you can set your own reminders as well, like this little smiley has helped me in the past:

In my early twenties my facial expression could sometimes look a bit grumpy. As such, I needed a frequent reminder to put up a friendly face in conversations with clients. My wife suggested that I put a small sticker with a smiley on the inside of my notepad. The smiley would give me a little reminder every time I took notes in a conversation. It worked very well for me! The smiley stayed on my notepad for many years.

What smileys can you set for yourself?
